Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Phoenix
Join us for an uplifting collaborative performance celebrating a uniquely American art form. Black American gospel music emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries alongside ragtime, blues, and jazz, but the roots of the tradition lie in both black and white music of the 19th century, including, most notably, African American spirituals, songs of enslaved people, and white hymnody. As an exciting precursor to Black History Month, you will enjoy gospel music from its African roots, Negro spirituals, and traditional and contemporary gospel music. The program will include performances by the Phoenix Boys Choir, Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Choir, ASU Gospel Choir, and the When Dreams Take Flight Festival Gospel Honor Choir, featuring 4th-6th grade students and educators led by guest clinician Maria A. Ellis.

Experience the timeless beauty of choral music as the Phoenix Boys Choir presents an unforgettable concert of choral masterpieces at our Classics Concert Series: Harmonious Journey. The program will include music for our 75th Anniversary Summer Tour 2023 to the British Isles with classics such as Loch Lomond and Danny Boy, along with Leonard Bernstein's Gloria Tibi from MASS. Be the first to experience the world premiere of Jubilate, be joyful! by Italian composer Giorgio Susana, third prize winner of our inaugural 2022 New Works Rising Choral Composition Competition. The centerpiece of this concert is the powerful masterpiece with organ, the sacred choral piece Te Deum in C by Benjamin Britten, one of the greatest British composers of the 20th century. Te Deum is an ancient hymn of praise, the words of which are believed to have been the result of a literary collaboration between St Augustine and St Ambrose.
Come and hear the angelic voices of our choristers as they lift their hearts in song, offering a truly unforgettable and spiritual experience for all who attend. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear one of the greatest works of choral music, performed by some of the most talented young voices in the country. Join us for an afternoon of classical music that will leave you uplifted and inspired.
