Join us for an uplifting collaborative performance celebrating a uniquely American art form. Black American gospel music emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries alongside ragtime, blues, and jazz, but the roots of the tradition lie in both Black and white music of the 19th century, including, most notably, Black spirituals, songs of enslaved people, and white hymnody. As an exciting precursor to Black History Month, you will enjoy gospel music from its African roots, Negro spirituals, and traditional and contemporary gospel music. The program will include performances by the Phoenix Boys Choir, Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Choir, ASU Gospel Choir, and the When Dreams Take Flight Festival Gospel Honor Choir, featuring 4th-6th grade students and educators led by guest clinician Maria A. Ellis.

Featuring PBC secular hits over our history, our concerts pay homage to the legacies of former Artistic Directors Dr. Harvey K. Smith and Mr. Georg Stangelberger, as well as reflecting the musical influences of Artistic Director Herbert Washington. Audience members will hear timeless classics with a Broadway flare including Edelweiss, Consider Yourself, My Favorite Things, Hallelujah, and Route 66. A highlight of this series will be the world premiere performances of The Journey, by Michigan's Jeffrey Cobb, and The Spirit of Adventure, by Phoenix-based composer Ryan Gunderson. These pieces were written specifically for PBC and the New Works Rising competition, and were selected as the first and second prize winners from more than 90 entries.
